The Burning Cinnamon Mask - Beware

I have seen all kinds of really cool masks on Pinterest and have used some of them with good results until TODAY!

Oh man, I tried the Honey/Cinnamon/Milk combo today and BURNED my face.  Yep!

I was supposed to take the girls to the pool after they cleaned their room.  They came downstairs all ready to go.  I yelled out from the bathroom that we might need to wait a bit.  They didn't like that answer and so they came into the bathroom and screamed when they saw my face.

Georgia tried to console me telling me that no one would notice.  hahaha  So, I had to get Andy to take them instead.

Once before I have chemically burned my face, it was two days before my wedding.  I thought that I would do a fun mask to get ready for my wedding and honeymoon.  Well, I used a new product and I didn't read the fine print that the mask was more of a chemical peel than a soothing, moisturizing one.  I have pretty sensitive skin to begin with.  It was just awful!

Luckily, the redness did go away but it completely ate away at the top layer of my skin.  I had foundation caked on my face which is very unlike me cause I wear hardly any makeup most of the time.  But at least you can't tell in the wedding photos.

Now, this is my second bout with this!  But I never would have thought that cinnamon could do this to your face.  The recipe called for 2 T honey, 2 t cinnamon, 2 t milk.  Leave it on for 10-30 minutes and rinse.  Well, I only used 1/2 t cinnamon but I did read that it can be strong.  It is very good for break outs or acne on your face.  And I only left it on for maybe 5 minutes.

Recipe Source
I have been doing the Oil Cleaning Method since the beginning of the year and have had wavering results.  I am cleared up in certain areas only to be breaking out in other areas esp. my chin.  It's like the Hawaii islands on my chin now.  And I have deep painful areas around my nose.  I have read this is called 'Purging'.  I will give it some more time to see.

So anyway I have been doing some masks here and there to help with the break outs.

BEWARE of CINNAMON!!!  It can chemically BURN you.

My face was so red.  I put aloe on it immediately.  It settled down after about 30 minutes.  And fortunately, after several hours most traces of redness are gone.  Thank Goodness for that!

I tried it on Andy because he thought I just had wussy skin. Guess what! It did the same thing to him. It definitely didn't take as long for his redness to go down. I did put aloe on his face too.

Here are my awful awful photos but I would hate for anyone not to know like me!  Next time, I think I will always check a product on my wrist first.

I need a way to fix it because I have to go in public tomorrow, but I am very, very self conscious about what I look like! So I am hoping that this works! The only thing is that I put this on a week ago with more cinnamon than instructed and nothing happened! I am so confused about this! I really hope this works! 😬

  3. I found your blog and OMG!

I made one of the pinterest DIY make ups with arrowroot and cinnamon, like a bronzer, and well it tingled. I ignored it. Kept using it and my cinnamon tinted moisturizer. Day 4 finally woke up with a red streak down my face that was actually burning!

Redness is gone but still some residual tingling.

    Cinnamon is serious!

    Thank you for sharing!

    1. Crazy isn't it? I would never have thought that would happen to my face either. It really goes to show that you do have to be careful with the things we all see & use on Pinterest. So glad that your face settled down too. I think the aloe really helped mine. I hope other people may see this post and be a little more careful with cinnamon. And so glad you found me :)

    1. I did the same thing having burned face sitting alone in the garden in dark and putting alovera gel on my face.. Hiding my face from my family because if anyone see make fun of me and mom will restrict me about applying anything on my skin in future.. It happened to me first time.. I wish I read about this before..

  5. You obviously didn't use all-natural cinnamon, brainless. Chemicals are added to enhance flavor in most spices, unless they're marked that they're all-natural.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Your brainless comment speaks volumes of your lack of education on the subject. Cinnamon even all-natural is a chemical substance. Even if something is from nature doesn't mean that everyone's skin can handle it. Would you put all-natural cayenne pepper on your face? Any product that use on your skin should be tested on a small area first!

    2. The internet seems to be littered with obnoxious know-it-alls like Kelly. For the record, I also tried a cinnamon mask, and I used organic cinnamon - high end stuff - and guess what? It still burned. And I don't even have particuarly sensitive skin. So yes. Be careful with it. Cinnamon is great taken internally but for some, it acts like a potent chemical peel when applied to facial skin.

      Delete
    3. I too used organic cinnamon and the only reason I found this blog was because in a panic after my shower I googled "cinnamon, face burn" because I was so scared of what just happened! But I wanted to share with you, Krista because you said you'd test it on your wrist next time, what I was using was a body scrub (cinnamon, brown sugar, jojoba, sweet almond oil) and specifically said "not for delicate facial skin", well I use a sugar scrub on my face all the time to so I didn't heed the warning… after I finished scrubbing my body I did my face only to experience the worst burning sensation EVER on my face and neck, but ONLY my face and neck! So testing on your wrist might not always be a guarantee, be safe!

  12. I had the same effect and was worried at first! A friend of mine who is a skin care professional said cinnamon can cause burning for some people. I also use retinol at night and wonder if that could be another reason. I used A&D cream on my burn and iced it and it looked better fast!

  13. I just had the same thing happen to me! I applied a honey, cinnamon and nutmeg mask and my face is now bright red and it burned pretty bad initially. A small amount of the mask got on my neck and it looks super red. I took a small glass of really cold milk to cool it down, which felt nice, and then applied aloe. It doesn't burn as much but its still really red and a little itchy. I'm just glad I'm not the only one!

  14. I have used this for two nights now. It burns, especially after I wash it off. But putting on aloe really helps. Luckily, my skin didn't turn red or anything. I increased the amount of honey the second time. It made it better. This mask really helps reduce pimples almost magically, so I don't want to stop using it. I guess the reaction depends on the cinnamon to honey ratio as well as the sensitivity of one's skin

  15. I just used the honey cinnamon mask, it burned my face, its so red. Hope it goes away. I have sensitive skin, I only had it on for 20 minuets. It really didn't start to burn until I rinsed it off. Hope the redness goes away before work tomorrow.

  16. What was the nutmeg mask you used? I was comparing between a milk+nutmeg mask vs the one you were describing here. From your experience, I think the nutmeg mask would be more suitable for me as I too, have very sensitive skin.

  20. Hey! I tried this cinnamon mask too. And it burned my face. The lady had said it was going to sting and hurt, but I didn't think it would be that bad. I literally touched my face with it and it started burning so badly. I kept it on for about a minute and then I thought I can't do this anymore, I'll just wash my face. I took it off and my cheek has a giant red blotch on it. It has been about thirty minutes but I haven't put aloe on it. Do you think it will go away without putting the aloe on it? I don't have any anyway. :( Thank you you're blog was so helpful, it made me feel better in the regard that I didn't have weak skin. :) Thanks again!

  21. Hi gals!
I just want to put my input in as I am a skin threrapist. The redness you are experiencing is quite normal. Actually very good for your complexion. As we age circulation and oxygen are crucial to keep the skin young. A little burning is good.....a lot..... Not so much. I am use to this effect and make it strong......(you work your skin up to stronger mixtures) if you decide to continue this mask.... Make sure you do the neck and chest! Krista my face gets super duper red. After 4 hours it looked like you skin was glowing! May I ask if your skin peeled at all?
A very high end skin line uses a resorsinol acid with cinnamon....... It is hot hot hot! We have to use fans!
Many actors use this mehod to get ready for the Red Carpet.... I have worked on several of them.
They also have a face massage where it gets slapped and pinched to big the oxygen and blood to the surface! I like the mask better myself...... To make it more purifying add just a few drops of food grade hydrogen peroxide for an added glow.
    Hope this helps!
I would never do this a few days before a special event ........start a month in advance.... You will glow like crazy! Hope this helps! What a great blog you have!

However i just checked it again and (2 hrs later) and my skin looks great! My face feels clean, tightad glowing. Thanks for sharing your experience, it help me to calm down. 3. I actually applied it for 2 days straight , I somehow endured it but after continuing it on the 3rd day , I started noticing that my forehead had rot of rashes and was raised , same thing happened to my cheek it was swollen , I tried cold compress mower it was worse and started spreading my face I look horrible now , it is it my and painful and the worst part I'm finding puss over them.
Is it normal ? I also fixed appointment with dermatologist tomorrow !

    4. The rashes and puss sound like purging. I know it's gross but you might want to look that up. I thought I was allergic to some products that worked for the first few days and then day 7 I was breaking out worse than I have in 30 years. But it turned out to be purging. Just glad I did it when I was off work.

  22. Thank god that I found your share. I tried many times with the method 2 cinnamon/2 honey and it worked perfectly, until today I put on the mask and for my eyes, I put on cucumber juice eye pads. Unluckily, when the liquid from the pad met the mixture, that burn the skin around my eyes :( so I have to wear glasses to hide it. In conclusion, the mask better not to go with any liquid product such as milk or cucumber juice as I accidentally found out. Goodluck next time!

    1. Yes, it happened to me as well! The first time, I mixed honey with cinnamon and my skin didn't react at all, and now I added some oatmeal cooked in water and my face was so red! Luckily, I applied honey and oatmeal (without cinnamon this time! :D) and aloe vera and the redness disappeared within 30 minutes... I will definitely use cinnamon again since it obviously improves blood flow, but next time only with honey, and only a sprinkle.

  23. I just tried a cinnamon mask recently and ended up burning my face and found tried a trick I learned about burns. If you take an egg white and whip it until it's foamy and apply it to your face it helps reduce the burn. I let the egg dry and then washed it off with cool/warm tap water then applied a fresh aloe leaf to my face. Lastly I washed my face with a mild soap and let my face rest. After about 20 mins or so, I checked on my face and the redness was GREATLY reduced. I finally applied my moisturizer (Neutrogena Naturals) and now about an 2 - 2 1/2 hours after burning my face you can't even tell that I burned it except that my face is really soft.

  24. I just tried this mask again today. I had tried it before and my face was fine. This time however my face and neck were red and hot. I told my mom to come into my room in 30 minutes to see if I was still alive. ;) I think however this time I made up my own proportions. Using too much cinnamon vs. honey. There should only be a sprinkle of cinnamon. I find the best honey for the face as well was manuka honey.

  25. Exact same thing has just happened to me! Unbelievably red face right now, I look ridiculous. I had the mask on for about 5 minutes and was sure it was burning so took it off to discover actual burn lines where the mask had been. Slavered myself in aloe vera and waiting for it to go down. I deffo will NOT be using this again.

  26. Just found this after a cinnamon burn on my back! I did the honey/cinnamon thing to lighten my hair. I let it sit all night on my head with no problems. My scalp is fine. I should have rinsed my head off before stepping in the shower. Stupid me! Took forever to rinse out and didn't realize that the cinnamon was still on my back. Thank goodness for husbands! He got it off after I got out. It's a burning itching sensation on my back. Lesson learned!

  27. I tried this mask the second time 4 days ago and it left me VERY ugly results. When I applied it on my forehead it burned like heck but I read it was supposed to be like that so I continued it down my cheeks and immediately washed it off cuz it hurts...and behold the tragedy. My forehead was read and have tiny bumps all over and its itchy. My cheeks have dry red and itchy spots. Cheeks and forehead have different result but are not flattering. This is the fourth day and I'm feeling really down right now :( Thankfully my nose and chin are still fine since I didn't apply on it. BTW, the only thing I did different from the first time I tried this was that I added water, I guess that was a bad idea? Not sure. I have been using green tea to calm my skin down , haven't tried aloe vera since I don't have one . Any substitutes for it? I wish I read your blog before trying it. All the ones I read had good results. :/ I hope others are warned before trying it.

  28. What you experienced is not actually a "chemical burn" it went away. Cinnamon has a chemical in it that is a dermal sensitizer or irritant. It causes redness (from blood flow) and a warming or burning sensation depending on the concentration and skin type. Increasing blood flow to your skin is beneficial. Cinnamon also kills bacteria. In the right concentration for you it is an awesome tool. The right concentration basically means how much you can stand... I make a soap with cinnamon EO in it. It causes warmth and a sunburn appearance and feel for a while out of the shower that dissipates. On cold days in Chicago the feeling is not unwelcome. My acne clears up, my skin tightens up, win win win for me. Be careful saying things like "chemical burn" being someone who frequently works with lye I can tell you that cinnamon is not anything close to what I consider a chemical burn...

    ReplyDelete
  29. I came across this blog post after it was sent to me by a friend who was worried about a face masque recipe recommendation that I gave her.

I am really sorry to hear about your experience with the cinnamon. However, I've been using a honey-cinnamon-lemon masque on my face since age 13 when I got into sports and my face started breaking out due to sweating and sunscreen usage. My skin is also very sensitive and I have a hard time using almost any commercial and non-natural product. I have used this masque recipe with great success for nearly a decade. It cleans out my pores and keeps my acne/whitehead/blackheads at bay (meaning I rarely have an outbreak), and the best part is that I don't have to use anything that isn't already in the my kitchen. In the winter, I also have redness around my nose and parts of my jaw, and the cinnamon clears this as well - I know this might sound odd, considering all of the accounts of burns in your post and comments, but as Jerek mentioned above, after the "warmth and sunburn appearance", the skin clears up completely.

    My recipe is as follows:
    1. 2 tbsp raw honey (regular commercial honey doesn't work for my skin. Melt the honey in a warm water bath to make it easier to mix with the next 2 ingredients)
    2. 1 tsp cinnamon (Cinnamon is a natural spice. I saw that you mentioned that cinnamon is a chemical substance in a comment above. Actually cinnamon is the dried bark of a tree. My parents are from India and I have seen how cinnamon rolls are harvested and dried for sale during a trip there. I don't trust ground cinnamon so I buy whole cinnamon and grind it myself. It's a much better flavor in cooking as well.)
    3. 1 tsp lemon

Mix all of the ingredients and then apply a thin layer over your face. You don't need to apply a whole lot of the masque. I use about a 1.5 tsp of the masque on my whole face. You can store the rest in the fridge for later use.

The most important thing about this masque is the timing. I do not leave it on my face for more than 15 minutes under any circumstances. If I haven't used it in a while (ie. 2-3 months), then I'll leave it on for 15 minutes. If this is a weekly or bimonthly ritual, then I leave it on for about 10-12 mins. If this is a nightly ritual, I leave it on for 6-7 minutes. Like Jerek mentioned above, the key thing is finding the right concentration or rather the ideal contact time with your skin to reap the benefits of all three ingrediants.

Immediately after washing off the masque, I apply lotion or a light oil (like sweet almond or argan) and retire for the evening. I have never experienced a burn over the years. I am in my early 30s and people routinely ask me what college I go to and I still get carded. I'm sure this is due to a combination of good genes and healthy lifestyle, but I also attribute it to this masque recipe.

Again, I'm sorry you experienced a burn, but I also wanted to share my own experiences to provide perspective to people wondering if cinnamon will burn your skin.

    1. Thanks for your comment, experience & recipe. Let me clarify my chemical description. I meant that everything is chemical in it's composition including our bodies an water. So, everyone should still treat all ingredients with care even if they are all natural and organic. I think I would have to use a scant amount but I just don't prefer to have it on my face but maybe in a bar of soap for my body. But my post is just a caution for people to realize that just because something as simple & common as cinnamon or any other household ingredient could potentially give you an adverse reaction. I never once thought that might happen to my face when I was using it or to even consider the amount of cinnamon that I was using.

  32. Wow, I thought cinnamon was supposed to be good for you! I just tried to make a recipe. It said to use 1/4 cup of ground cinnamon (preferably self-ground), 2 teaspoons of natural cane sugar, and just a couple of pinches of baking soda, and add just enough water to get a paste. Supposedly, this can be used as a daily facial cleanser.

I think the woman who recommended this might be slightly sadistic. I only used 1 teaspoon of cinnamon (just powder bought at the store), 2 teaspoons of sugar, and a teeny-tiny bit of baking soda. I added the water, and wet my face with water before I applied it.

I did not scrub, Just spread it, and I used an amount maybe equal to the nail of my thumb (for my entire face). Within seconds of touching my skin, it started burning like crazy. I washed it off immediately, and the burning sensation stopped. But wow, I am glad I didn't use as much as the recipe recommended, I can't even imagine the pain. This is a recipe to give to someone you really don't like!

  33. Thank you so much for enlightening me but I had to try. And damn!! Its hot. Im white and my face gets red pretty easily. Usually its not because of substances but because of sun exposition and exfoliating/scrubbing the face. Back to the mask.. I put too much cinnamon. Also dont COVER you face with it, just aply a thin coat. So the combo + cinnamon - honey (a bit hardened) and a thick layer = red face with some hot burning sensation. So I recommend testing a smaller area and having some aloe gel!!!!!!!! This helped me a lot!!! Please test before, i didnt and now my skin feels hot to touch. And my neck (a bit below the chin) also got burnt/red.

  37. omg, the same thing happened to me. my face started burning after like 1 minute of having the homemade mask on my face. after I washed it all off it looked like I had a VERY sunburn on my face and neck. it took like 4-5 hours for my skin to return to normal.

  39. I just did a cinnamon/honey/lemon mask for acne prone skin and HOLY COW!!! My skin was on fire like literally after I put it on my skin. I immediately rinsed my face off with cold water and slathered olive oil all over. The pain went away instantly AND olive oil is a great moisturizer! My face is still pretty red though. :/

  40. hi... I did cinnamon mask too last night..., I feel burn at the very fist I put on the mask, less than 5 minutes I washed it off. My face turned red... sooooo painful, it feels like my face been slapped over and over again LOL... I'm so scared so i try to find some info, than i find your article, i put on aloe vera, and 30 minutes later my face slightly turn to normal (thanks !!!). But, there's a good surprise when i wake up in the morning my face glowing, my skin so plump...i'd like to use it again next week (but i will reduce cinnamon portion). I really satisfied with the result, so i think i can bear the pain... :D

  41. Tried honey cinnamon mask 07/14/14. Didn't notice any major difference til next afternoon. Face was itchy, swollen, blistered and pimply. Drove me crazy all night. Yesterday face felt like sandpaper there were so many tiny bumps! From my eyelids to the spot on my chest where it had splashed Monday. I bought an Aloe Vera plant and started putting that on three times a day with alittle relief after a few minutes for a short period. kept splashing cool water on face. Today It looks like they are trying to go away but just alittle...still very itchy. Hopefully by next Monday I'll have my old face back ..

  43. I just used honey and cinnamon this morning as a mask. For me it did not burn instantly or just turn red, but a few hours later, my face was full of small red pimples that were not there in the morning, and I am very disappointed. This is the second time I use it. I thought it was a mistake 3 years ago when I tried it, or a coincidence, but now that it happened again I would never ever use cinnamon on my face again. It should stop acne not cause new pimples to cover the face! I think my skin is just too sensitive for that.

    1. Your skin is definitely either too sensitive or you are allergic to the ingredients. You are meant to experience a purging effect - all the unwanted oils dirt and bacteria should come to the surface and expel itself after you use the mask, decreasing significantly each time you use it. However, the experience of small red pimples only hours after the mask does not sound right. Definitely discontinue the use of the mask you made.

  44. I put a little bit of cinnamon on my face after a quick search on "diy face masks" and within ten seconds it BURNED burned burned and i had to rinse it all off immediately. Definitely be very very careful of cinnamon in case you have an allergic reaction like I did. Again, if something burns it doesn't mean it's working!

  47. I have used a cinnamon based mask several times. Before I used it I googled extensively the effects of every natural product I was placing in my homemade mask. I recommend anyone doing anything at home to research what each product your putting in does and how it MIGHT effect you. The cinnamon is meant to burn (it is the main ingredient in burning face masks) however the burning is meant to subside after several minutes. If this is not the case then yes, your skin is too sensitive OR you have used too much cinnamon.
I use a facial scrub with sugar, honey, lemon.
Followed by a burning face mask with cinnamon, honey, lemon, tumeric, nutmeg. IF i feel the need for something soothing I will also add milk and/or avocado to the mixture. Today I also added baking soda.
This mask may burn slightly for a few short minute (max 4) however it is thoroughly worth it. My skin is amazing, soft, tight and removes pimples and imperfections amazingly. I highly recommend it.

Start by only using a small amount of cinnamon. Each time you do the mask up the quantity until you are able to feel a slight burning however it subsides and does not cause you severe discomfort.. Think first people..

  48. I used a stone to paste my nutmeg and cinnamon. Took 5:1 ratio of the paste respectively. Added drops of lemon and honey to it. Mixed well and applied on my face for 15 mins. I didnt feel it burn or tingle. Probably the ratio or depends on my skin type. I rinsed it off with normal tap water. Dabbed my face with a clean towel. Face looked glowing and fresh. Noticed a few tiny bumps. It might go away in a while.

  51. I had my Cinnamon/honey/tumeric mask on for 3 minutes and while it aggeicated my face my flaky patches are gone. Lol let's call it a "natural" chemical peel. My face is naturally red because I'm a redhead so it just made the places without roseacca look like I had a matching red mask on.

  52. Happened to me too. I went to health food store and an employee and I figured out that there were other ingredients in the ground cinnamon and some of the cinnamons didn't even have a cinnamon smell. So we decided that only use cinnamon sticks and grind your own in a coffee grinder or spice grinder. so I only use one stick to a mask and grind my own and no more red burning face. when you have burning from the cinnamon worst think is to rinse with water. use coconut oil or some other oil. then rinse with cold water if you have to and I then put fresh avacado on my skin for a bit and it cools it down and stops burning. You have to use the sticks and only one to a mask

  53. Last year, I used just honey and cinnamon mask, it didn't really clean it, but it didn't burn it at all. Btw, my skin is pretty sensitive. Today, I tried mask with oats, water, honey, lemon and cinnamon. And it left my face sooo red after less than five minutes, I didn't have aloe or anything so I put just ordinary Nivea creme and it helped, thanks God! Now, I really don't think the redness was because of lemon, I know it is acid and all, but it doesn't bother me. Just wanted to share my awful cinnamon story because it's how I found your blog. Beware people

  54. That EXACTLY happened to me!!! My skin is pretty oily and I have bad acne so I wanted to try it and it burned my skin but I left it on for the whole time and when I took it off, my whole face was red!!!! Mainly around my nose and it was a bit puffy and even afterwards it BURNED. NEVER again

  55. Girls, girls, don't panic! Yes, the cinnamon mask burns a little but it works so it's worth it! As long as you don't do it everyday, it's fine! It is really effective against acne and it makes your pimples go away really fast! Don't apply the mask all over your face, just on the areas where you are more likely to get pimples/acne or on actual pimples. And just keep it for 10min.

I have been doing the turmeric and cinnamon masks now for a while and I have never had a skin so perfect in my life! And I suggest you don't use milk in your mask as dairy products are not recommended if you have acne. Use lemon juice instead.

I know we all react differently but the burning part is normal and it really is effective to get rid of acne. If you really can't stand it, you can use cinnamon essential oil (it will still burn a little bit, but not as much and you just apply it on your pimples), it does wonders!

    ReplyDelete

    1. Actually, for some, cinnamon doesn't just burn, "a little." It is as bad as the worst sunburn I've ever had. I thought I might start blistering. Essential oil would most likely burn even more as it is even stronger.

My spouse thinks it's a miracle, but I know differently. What can you say to a man who encouraged you to take your fate in your own hands and makes such an impact on your life?

  57. I have applied honey, cinnamon and avocado masks for a year now. I do them once a month or if I have an avocado that is too ripe... never had an issue til today. After having the mask on for about 5 minutes I started to wonder why my face was so hot. Looked in the mirror and could see the redness through the green/brown mask... only freaked out slightly. I splashed with cold water for five minutes or so and then applied aloe vera gel and lavender oil (lavender oil made it sting a bit more but I think it helped. After leaving lavender on for a minute I rinsed it off because it was stinging still. Reapplied aloe a couple times and iced face, especially my cheeks along jaw line because this area was the most red. Redness is now about gone or back to normal except for along cheeks. I have an egg white on my face now... should help get rid of the last bit of redness. The only thing I did differently was use a different type of cinnamon, I think it is the Ceylon kind. Thinking this is what did me in this time... oops!

Ironically, my face looks great so far and that's why I believe the people who are saying it is good for the skin and improves circulation. My face feels tight and smooth (other than the couple blemishes I have).

    Thanks for your blog! :)

  59. I use herbal teas for my hair. I recently tried an apple cinnamon tea. When I used it on my hair I was in the shower. Needless to say, the tea got all over my body. It immediately started burning. I washed it all off but, it didn't matter. I got out of the shower and used some aloe. My skin was storing heat by this time, just like a sunburn. I was beet red all over. I couldn't stop burning and thought this couldn't seriously have "burned" me. So, I went and took an antihistamine and in no time, the red was gone and the burning subsided. I was sure I was going to be as red the next day, that there was no way that would go away like it did. I figured it would need time to heal. The pill did the trick though. Thought I would share that with everyone.

  60. I just did this mask with 1 tsp cinnamon and 2 tsp honey. It looked like poo and felt funny to run on my face. As soon as I washed it off it began to eat at my flesh. It was a little frightening. I didn't know what to do, so I washed my face (again) with a sugar/olive oil scrub, then I put coconut oil on my face and decided to look it up online to see if I could get any tips as to what to do, that's when I found this post! :) I got up and grabbed my aloevera and put some on my face, that made it itch and burn a bit, so I put some more coconut oil over it, and it started to feel better again :) I'm just glad I'm not going crazy and hope it goes down soon :)

  85. I just tried this mask last night. The recipe called for 1 1/2 t. cinnamon (which sounds like quite a bit compared to some commenters) mixed with 1 T. honey. My honey is raw, but the cinnamon in just basic ground cinnamon. Left it on for 30 min. per the instructions and then rinsed and finished with a toner of equal parts ACV and water. My face did not burn during the 30 min, but the rubbing that occurred with rinsing did bring some redness and burning. This was expected. I figured it was a bit of a chemical peel plus the cinnamon felt like a scrub. My skin felt smooth and tight. I applied a little lotion and some castor oil and woke up just fine. Clearly you should try any of these things with caution. Oh, and the directions said to do this every night! I'm not sure I'll risk that, but maybe start with once a week and then increase from there. I wonder if the ACV/water toner helped to reverse or stop some of the burn? That seems to be an element no one else has used. Hope this helps someone.

I have used cinnamon+honey+lemon mask before but nothing happened but 2 days ago i simple used cinnamon+lemon mask.I have normal skin i knew it burn little bit.It was all ok, but next morning when i woke up my face was swollen , little itchy, and very very RED.I tried ice pack to calm down swelling.
2nd day red face, and swelling was down. but still my skin feel very hard because whole first layer is burnt, I feel like it will dry and will peel of entire top layer of skin like chemical peel or laser on face.

As of now i am applying honey twice on my face and aloe vera gel.IF anyone has gone through same please let me know how many days it will take before i get my normal face.AND what should i do further to speed up peel of skin .like any home remedy.THANKS in advance AND THANKs to Blogger for this post.

  89. I just tried a mask after hearing the benefits of honey, cinnamon, and lemon juice I decided I was going to try it. I tried a cinnamon mask before, a lemon juice mask, and a honey mask. All went well, but then I found a recipe for honey cinnamon, and lemon juice. I had not even put it on for maybe a minute and it started to burn. I rinsed it off immediately and washed my face and it looks like now I have a sun burn and feels like a sun burn. I don't have any aloe because we ran out so i'm sitting with an ice pack wrapped in a towel against my face. I'm glad to hear and see everything was pretty much back to normal after a few hours because this would have really put a damper in my day if it took up my entire day and if I was stuck with it tomorrow. Thanks for you post I have hope it should go down. It's not itchy or swelling. It's just red like a sunburn. I think it might even peel later, but hopefully not. Not going to lie I did start crying after I saw the redness because I started to panic.

I quickly washed it off with mild warm water and it soothed the pain a little, but my face turned really red and hot. At first I thought it was an allergic reaction or something, but I had been doing it all through the week. I don't know what I did wrong that made this happen. I sat in front of a fan for about 20 minutes and the redness is slowly going away, but I have to go out later to see all my teachers for parent teacher conferences so if anyone has any tips on how to make the redness go away fast, please let me know ASAP!

  95. Hi,

I would like to add my experience as well. Just had the same honey, yoghurt and cinnamon mask on for 10 min. The article mentioned that if you have sensitive skin keep it on less time. I believe I followed the measures: half cup yoghurt, 1 table spoon honey and half of cinnamon. I noticed a burning sensation, not unbearable for around 5 min that relaxed after. Yet after washing the mask I was red a crab, OMG! Yes, I do have a sensitive skin. Freaked out, washed more cold water and applied my regular cream/oils: eye cream and and oxigenated olive oil for the face and neck(I applied the mask all over my neck too :/ ). Went researching over the internet and found this post and read all the comments. Unfortunately I had no aloe Vera at home, so as I kept reading time passed and guess what the redness disappeared in a proportion of 90% in 1h.
My advice: use the right amounts, try the mask first, research the ingredients and their effects on the akin. Do this mask at night! I may not be a bad mask, but it should be done with more care and previous research.

Hope all your problems went away quickly!

    Cheers!

The hot water and steam makes your skin more sensitive than usual. I didnt even leave it on very lon (maybe 7 min, I usually leave it 20-25) I then showered and when I got out I applied my mostier and acne medcation like I usally do. I work up this morning and looked in the mirror. My skin is red, swollen, blistered, its baddd! I have been applying aloe vera and it seems to be helping but I don't know what else to do! 109. Cinnamon is rather potent. If you have sensitive skin, allergies, or generally get say sunburned easily, don't put strong herbs like cinnamon or even turmeric on your face. These herbs are anti-inflammatory in nature but they also are rather strong acting against inflammation. This blog is a great lesson to proceed with caution for these kinds of health food trends. I can do masks like this with few problems but not everyone can do these masks. Please do a skin test before you proceed! Thank you for this blog by the way!

  118. Had acne on my face, as recommended by someone I took half tomato poured cinammon powder on it and rubbed on my face.. As soon as I applied I felt like my face is burning. Washed it atonce but for a minute I went into shock cursing myself I have burnt my face.. Applied cucumber, and then iced it but face was same.. Applied aloe Vera gel and cried.. Fortunately came across this article and had a sigh of relief that it will go away... After an hour redness was away and today my face is glowing like never before.. But experience was horrifying.. Use appropriate amount of cinnamon if anyone wants to..

  124. In Addis Ababa they were refused visas to cross the Sudan: but instead of make a return journey over those awful Ethiopian roads they chose to continue north without visas. They left Ethiopia, by-passed the Sudanese border post by driving through the desert, then made a frantic non-stop dash along the Red Sea coast for Egypt.

  125. I just had the same shit happen though I didn't make the mistake of leaving it for long. I've used a cinnamon mask before and it was cool, really worked. I'm thinking it's the milk? I added milk to this one and as soon as I got it on, it started burning real bad. Washed it off immediately and applied aloe. Phew.. My face's okay, thank God. I just had to check if cinnamon really burns or I got something mistakenly into it. Thanks for sharing.

  128. I got a small burn patch high up on my cheekbone from using a mixture of cinnamon, honey, lemon & hair conditioner for lightening my hair - you're supposed to leave it in your hair a couple hours at least, and wear a shower cap, which I did. But at some point some loose hair slid out from under the shower cap, because I got this burn that looked like it was just some of the goo- at first - being stuck on my face. Googling for what was best to treat the spot with took some time, but finally found this article. I don't have time to read every single comment but the ones I did read indicate they're from others who were using cinnamon in any form specifically for a face mask. What I wanted to share (that I didn't see, and you know I didn't read all the replies) was how the recipe that I used for this mentioned that cinnamon, when mixed with honey, activates into a kind of bleach - the reason I used it for hair lightening. In all the search results about cinnamon and honey this chemical change was not mentioned - only in the recipe did it tell about it. Apparently, not only can cinnamon burn your skin but when mixed with honey, you're now dealing with a naturalized bleach - but it's bleach, no matter how natural, like many of the comments also mentioned about the cinnamon. I'm not saying cinnamon without honey would otherwise be perfectly safe; I'm just saying what happens when it's combined with honey - it's like - doubly risky. And for anyone who didn't know that's why cinnamon mixed with honey (and some lemon juice) is capable of mildly bleaching the hair. Again, apologies if this was already mentioned further down in all the comments. I did my hair with this same recipe once before but never accidentally had it slide out to rest against my skin, anywhere. The recipe did say to do a skin patch test, but I only put it in my hair, not close or on my scalp, so --- besides, I wasn't aware the darn section of hair had slipped out, and can't say for sure how long it sat there on my skin before it started to damage it. It's like between a first and second degree burn, so, yeah, as everyone knows by now from reading the article & comments - all natural doesn't always mean harmless! For just in case this wasn't mentioned (cinnamon with honey activates into a bleach). As for plain honey by itself, I've used that many times on my skin without problems. I even read where honey is recommended for this facial burn, but for now, I don't feel like trying it!! All I have on hand is some liquid vitamin e, some castor oil for skin, some Vaseline and regular lotions. So far, they're not making it worse. I'll be relieved if it doesn't leave a scar & just use concealer if it does -- after it heals completely. At least I found out I'm not the only one who had this happen. But, do also be careful about combining cinnamon with honey, for the bleach that it makes!!
