Kids in the Kitchen Baking Competition

This summer I read the neatest book about a journalist mom who was raising her children in Paris (find it here).  She talked about the whole food culture there and how they start teaching their children to bake at the young age of 3.  In France, they also have baking competitions for all ages throughout all the communities.  I thought what a brilliant idea!  There is nothing quite like this event in the States let alone Montrose, CO.  We would be starting the first baking competition for kids in this area from preschool thru 12th grade.

I want to encourage our children to love 'slow' food, to have confidence in the kitchen and possibly ignite a passion for cooking or even a career.  Our school (Pope John Paul II Academy) is in the process of constructing a big, new building with a new kitchen.  I want this event to be kid centered and something that our students can be a part of to help contribute funding into their new school.  All proceeds of this event will go towards new kitchen equipment or possibly a school garden that our students will be able to benefit from and use as well.

I am so excited about the possibilities of this event.  We have so many great ideas to make this a huge success, and we can build on it year after year.  We also have wonderful awards for 1st, 2nd & 3rd places of each age group.  All the prizes to each category and age group will all be food related.  And each winner will be acknowledged with a chef hat!!  We have an awesome selection of people from the community to be the judges.  Among them, Nick Rinne from Sushitini will also be awarding a sushi rolling lesson.  Kerri Noonan-Inda who is the owner Dilly Dale's Delights (best cupcakes ever) will also be a judge, and Dr. Mike Brezinsky, our very own president of the board, will also be judging.

We want to give a BIG thank you to the Bridges Golf Club for hosting our event!

I hope that we get a huge response and get our kids baking in the kitchen!  Please email me if you have any questions!  Let's spread the word.

Thank you again,
