Chocolate Crackle Cookies

Sophia and I made these cookies the other day.  They were so yummy and so pretty.  They tasted like little cookie brownie bites.  And they are so festive looking too.  I think it would be fun to put red food coloring in them to make them like red velvet crackles for Christmas.

Chocolate Crackle Cookies
adapted from Martha Stewart
makes 5 dz.

8 oz bittersweet chocolate chopped
1 1/4 c all purpose flour
1/2 c cocoa powder
2 t baking powder
1/4 t salt
1/2 c unsalted butter softened
1 1/2 c light brown sugar
2 eggs
1 t vanilla
1/3 c milk
1 c sugar
1 c powdered sugar

Preheat oven to 350 F.  Melt chocolate in a microwaveable bowl just until it's melted (maybe 2 minutes) stirring it in 30 sec. intervals.  Set aside to cool.  Mix dry ingredients in a separate bowl.  Mix butter and brown sugar until pale and fluffy. Mix in eggs, then vanilla, then melted chocolate.  Don't overheat.  Slowly mix in dry ingredients alternating with milk.  The dough will be very runny like a cake batter.  Cover with saran wrap and refrigerate until firm (about 2 hours).

Spoon out the dough and roll into balls.  Then roll into sugar then roll in powdered sugar.  Place on cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.  Bake until the surface cracks, about 14 minutes.  Let cool on wire racks. Store in airtight container.
